A new collection of lampshades, known as MushLume, offers an eco-friendly alternative to traditional materials by using mushroom mycelium. Unlike common lampshades made of metal, plastic, or glass, mycelium-based lampshades are sustainable, biodegradable, and renewable.
Mycelium, the root structure of mushrooms, is celebrated for its minimal environmental impact. It requires very little water and energy to produce, thereby reducing carbon emissions and waste. Moreover, mycelium is biodegradable, allowing it to decompose safely in compost or landfill environments, although MushLume lamps are designed to last for years.
Mycelium’s use in design is gaining traction due to its versatility and environmental benefits. It is cultivated in labs, avoiding the high-energy processes associated with traditional manufacturing. The resulting material resembles concrete in appearance, but is surprisingly lightweight. The company says that each lampshade features unique textures and patterns, adding character and warmth to the light they diffuse.
MushLume lamps not only provide a sustainable lighting solution but also challenge conventional design and production methods. Despite their promising attributes, further testing is necessary to determine if mycelium can be scaled up for widespread use in product manufacturing.
If you want to invest towards sustainable design, you can check out their e-store, and discover several designs starting from $295, all of them taking a very innovative approach to reducing environmental impact while maintaining aesthetic appeal.
